Lt. Gen. John R. Vines compares the Fayetteville area's growth potential in coming years to the development of the Research Triangle Park.
“I believe that great things are in store for Fayetteville,” said Vines, commander of Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps. “Just like other areas, it's about leadership and whether or not our leadership both here on Fort Bragg and surrounding communities have the wisdom to shape that change in a positive way.” Government, business and university leaders helped create the planned, public-private RTP in 1959 amid Duke University in Durham, N.C. State University in Raleigh and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Nowadays, the park has more than 136 companies employing 37,600 workers in a variety of industries, with combined annual salaries of more than $2.7 billion, the RTP Web site says.
Fort Bragg expects to add 22,000 people — including soldiers, civilian employees and family members — by 2011 with the potential for attracting large military contractors. Fayetteville and Spring Lake this year reached an incorporation agreement with Fort Bragg, with each planning to take parts of Fort Bragg into their corporate limits. “I believe that based on a whole range of things coming together, this area has reached a unique set of dynamics that is going to allow it to grow in a very positive way, in a structured way, one that is organized,” Vines said.
